    Excuse my ignorance but what is the significance of the colon ":" before the options. I'm guessing it marks an array ?

    <%= select_year 2008, :start_year => 1900, :end_year => 2020 %>

    Just a shortcut for

    <%= select_year 2008, {'start_year' => 1900, 'end_year' => 2020} %>

    not symbols as in Ruby (yet :) )
